In 1971, an American educator, Dr. Ray Johnson was invited by the National Spiritual Assembly to head the school. During his unique period of service, New Era became an international school. The classroom building was completed, new properties bought and a talented international team was recruited. He also nurtured and staffed a unique social service project that has now grown into the New Era Development Institute. Mr. Richard Grover came as Vice-Principal and Mrs. Grover ably organized the Feeder section for Iranian students. Mr. Barn Ross organized development projects, Mr. Edwin Miller established the Institute of Rural Technology and Mr. Falairiva Taafaki, as director, carried the rural development projects to a point where public appreciation and recognition was accorded. Mrs. Beverly Miller brought her special abilities as administrator and curriculum developer. Mrs. Irene Taafaki, as Headmistress of the Primary Section, trained the staff and made the Elementary School a very special one. Mr. Truitt White served as Vice-Principal of the Secondary and Behin White acted as Head of the Primary for a period. Mr. Gerald Morris developed music education while Liz Morris acted as health specialist. Mrs. Mildred Howe established and ran an innovative art workshop. Glenda Palmer of New Zealand specialized in games and outdoor activities, directing the Duke of Edinburgh awards programme. Mr. Godfrey Bishop arrived in 1982 and as Head of the Secondary School and was responsible for New Era’s recognition as centre for the G.C.E. (London). Dr. Johnson was assisted by his wife, LaNelma, as superintendent of the residential section. Failing health of their parents required their presence in the United States and after twelve years of valuable service, they returned to their original home.
