ENGLISH FACULTY
English is the medium of instruction in the school. The school follows the C.B.S.E. Board or Central Board of Secondary Education. The curriculum of English as prescribed by the board aims at equipping a student with the communicative skills to survive successfully in this world. These skills include the skill to read, speak, understand and write effectively.

TEXTBOOKS
The English textbooks up to class VIII are selected by the teachers. The textbooks of class IX and X are the ones prescribed by the C.B.S.E. The Secondary students practice with model test papers in a separate book.

METHODOLOGY
New Era High School encourages innovative and creative methods of teaching. Moral values are incorporated into the day-to-day curriculum. Teachers are inspired to formulate lesson plans centred on a moral value or principle. This is in accordance with the Mission Statement:
New Era aims, through moral and academic excellence, to produce promoters of social transformation imbued with the spirit of service to mankind.

LESSON PLAN USING AND TEACHING CONSULTATION
The English teachers use the process of consultation in teaching. Learning about consultation is important for moral development, cooperative learning and all kinds of group work. An example of a lesson plan based on consultation is as follows:

Subject - English IX
Lesson: Children (Main Course) Project: Children and TV
Aim: To learn some of the principles of ‘consultation’
1. To participate in spontaneous discussion in a group
2. To respect other’s opinions
3. To listen to others patiently
4. To exchange information in an orderly manner
5. To express one’s views with moderation
6. To assign roles to participants in a group discussion (chairperson, secretary, participants, etc.)
7. To carry out the tasks given
8. Not to hurt someone’s feelings (not to ridicule others)
9. To follow the teacher’s instructions


Presentation: The class is divided into groups of 5 or 6 students each. Each group selects its chairperson, secretary and spokesman. The class is given the topic of discussion—written on the blackboard.

Topic: ‘TV Viewing Is Harmful for Children’
The various principles of consultation are explained to the students. The process of consultation is set into motion. The teacher monitors the discussions. After a specified time, the speaker for each group gives a report.
Recapitulation:The students are asked oral questions based on all the reports presented.
Assignment: Students write the report in their notebooks.
